Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Partner description

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) was founded in 1927. UFMG is a public institution of higher education of excellence, recognized as a national reference in terms of academic-scientific production. UFMG offers 75 undergraduate programs and 70 graduate programs in all areas of knowledge, with about 50 thousand students. The undergraduate program in Computer Science has been consistently ranked as the best in the country in the recent years. Moreover, the Ministry of Education has ranked UFMG, along with two other institutions, the best graduate programs in the country.

As a Collaborating Institution in mPlane, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais will contribute with its expertise incollecting measurement data from the campus network(s) and then define methodologies for data analysis and processing, with particular attention to i) passive measurements and ii) cloud service characterization.

Role in mPlane

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais  will be mainly involved in the WP1, WP2 and WP5 activities:

  1. Data collection from existing probes and from mPlane probes;
  2. Planning of the assessment activities, including the definition of tests and experiments to be run;
  3. Characterization of a set of cloud services, such as Dropbox;
  4. Defining and describing on how mPlane platform can help on cloud services characterization;
  5. Assessment of the deployed prototype during the mPlane project.

UFMG will work together with all collaborating institutions on gathering data from our campus and comercial ISPs.  Research areas include: Passive Traffic Probes and Traffic Characterization.

Key Personnel

Prof. Jussara Marques de Almeida got her PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US in 2003. She joined the Computer Science Department of UFMG in 2004, where she is currently an Associate Professor. Her  areas of interest include performance analysis and modeling of large scale distributed systems, workload and user behavior characterization as well as social computing. She is currently an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Science.

Prof. Ana Paula Couto da Silva earned her PhD degree in Computer and System Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2006. She was with IRISA-Rennes, France, in 2005 and 2007, and with Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2008 (PosDoc position). In 2010 and 2011 (January and February), she was visiting research at Politecnico di Torino. Her areas of interest are in the field of modeling and analysis of computer systems, P2P application analysis, complex network theory applied on Computer Networking, modeling of new techniques for providing energy-efficient networking and characterization of Internet Traffic. She has co-authored a set of publication with Politecnico di Torino.
